Krishna helped Sudama in difficult times.
Friendship has always been important in Indian tradition. In our life, the place is given to the friend after the parents and the teacher. But when it comes to friendship, people forget to take a bath in the Dwapar era or the story of the friendship between Krishna and Sudama.
Why Krishna and Sudama's friendship got so much fame can be understood through a popular story.
• Sudama was very poor
Sudama, who was a classmate of Lord Krishna, was from a very poor Brahmin family. The situation in front of them was such that it became difficult even to feed the children. Tired of poverty, one day Sudama's wife told him that he himself could be hungry but could not see the children hungry. Tears welled up in his eyes while saying this.
Seeing this, Sudama was very sad and the wife asked its solution. On this Sudama's wife said – You keep telling that the king of Dwarka, Krishna is your friend. And the king of Dwarka has your friends, so why not go to him once? He is your friend, so seeing your condition, he will give something without asking. On this Sudama agreed to meet his friend Krishna with great difficulty. He told his wife Sushila that he does not go to a friend's place empty-handed, so he should take some gifts. But there was not even a grain of food in his house. It is said that many of Sudama tied in a bundle as a gift.
• Tears came to Krishna's eyes seeing Sudama
When Sudama reached Dwarka, he was surprised to see the splendor there. The whole city was of gold. The people were very happy and prosperous. Sudama, asking the people somehow, reached Krishna's palace and told the guards standing at the door that he wanted to meet Krishna. But seeing his condition, the gatekeepers asked what is the work? Sudama- Krish is my friend
The gatekeepers went to the palace and told Lord Krishna that some poor Brahmin had come to meet him. He is telling his name as Sudama. On hearing this Sudama name, Lord Krishna ran barefoot to take Sudama. The people present there were astonished that what kind of friendship can be between a king and a poor monk.
Lord Krishna took Sudama to his palace and reminisced about his school days. Krishna asked Sudama what the sister-in-law has sent for him. Sudama got confused and started hiding the rice bundle. Seeing this, Krishna snatched the rice bundle from him. Lord Krishna started eating dry rice only. Tears welled up in his eyes seeing Sudama's poverty.
• Gave everything without asking
Sudama stayed in Dwarkapuri for a few days but could not ask for anything hesitantly. While leaving, Krishna came to drop them some distance away and hugged them. When Sudama started returning to his house, he started thinking that the wife would ask what he had brought, what would he answer?
When Sudama reached home, he could not see his hut there. He was looking for his hut when his wife came out of a beautiful house. He was wearing beautiful clothes. Sushila said to Sudama, saw the glory of Krishna, by removing our poverty, Krishna took away all our sorrows. Sudama remembered Krishna's love. Tears of happiness welled up in his eyes.
Friends, this was the true friendship of Krishna and Sudama. It is said that Krishna had made Sudama richer than himself. People give examples of this noble intention of friendship even today.
Krishna-Sudama's friendship impresses people so much that many people keep the tune of ''Hey gatekeeper, tell Kanhaiya...' even in collartune.
Friendship lessons
Friendship never seeks richness or poorness. Friendship is forever. It is all about love and respect. Like Krishna and Sudama, one should never forget one’s friend, and should always try to respect him/her despite their conditions. If it is possible, one should try to help the friend. As the saying goes, a friend in need is the friend indeed.
If one makes friendship with Krishna, one will never be cheated and he will get all help needed.
