The word 'Navratra' refers to the new ahoraratras (special nights). Nav forms of Shakti are worshiped at this time. The word 'Ratri' signifies accomplishment.
The ancient sages of India have given more importance to the night than the day, so there is a tradition of celebrating festivals like Deepawali, Holika, Shivratri and Navratri at night. If there was no special secret of the night, then such festivals would not be called 'Ratri' but 'Din' but the days of Navratri would not be called 'Navdin'.
The sages have made the law of Navratras twice a year. On the first day of Vikram Samvat i.e. from Pratipada (1st date) of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month till 9 days i.e. Navami and similarly after exactly 6 months from Pratipada of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month till Mahanavami i.e. 1 day before Vijayadashami. But from the point of view of accomplishment and sadhna, Shardiya Navratras are considered more important.
In these Navratras, people perform various types of fasts, restraints, rules, yagyas, bhajans, worships, yoga-sadhana etc. to accumulate their spiritual and mental power. Some seekers try to achieve special accomplishments during these nights by sitting in Padmasana or Siddhasana for the whole night by chanting the inner Tratak or Beej Mantras.

When Sati reached that yagya, she was disrespected by all, even King Daksha insulted Lord Shiva. Sati could not bear all this and jumped into the burning pool. When Lord Shiva came to know about this, there was a terrible massacre. It is said that Sati was born in her next birth as the daughter of Shailraj Himalaya.
