According to religious tales, once Brihaspati ji asked Brahma ji why Navratri is fasted and celebrated in the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra and Ashwin months? What is the result of this fast, how is it appropriate to do it? Who did this fast first?
In response to this question of Brihaspatiji, Brahma said - O Brihaspatiya! You have asked a very good question from the desire for the welfare of the living beings. In fact, those human beings who meditate on Durga, Mahadev, Surya and Narayan, who fulfill their desires, are blessed. This Navratri fast is going to fulfill all the wishes. By doing this, the one who desires a son gets a son, the one who craves for wealth gets wealth, the one who desires knowledge of knowledge and the one who desires happiness.
By observing this fast, the disease of the sick person gets cured. All the troubles of man are removed and prosperity increases in the house, the infertile gets a son. One gets rid of all sins and the desire of the mind is fulfilled.
According to Brahmaji, a person who does not observe this Navratri fast, suffers many miseries and suffers from pain and disease, attains limblessness, does not have children and is devoid of wealth and food, wanders full of hunger and thirst. - wanders and becomes unconscious. A virtuous woman who does not observe this fast, she is deprived of her husband's happiness and suffers many sorrows. If the person observing the fast is not able to fast for the whole day, then eat one meal at a time and listen to the story of Navratri fasting for ten days with the bandhavas.
O Brihaspati ji ! I tell you the story of the one who has performed this Mahavrata before, you listen carefully. In this way, hearing the words of Brahma ji, Brihaspati ji said - O brahmin, tell me the history of this fast for the welfare of human beings, I am listening carefully. Have mercy on me taking refuge in you.
Brahma said- In ancient times, there lived an orphan Brahmin named Peetha in the city of Manohar, he was a devotee of Bhagwati Durga. A very beautiful girl named Sumati was born with all her virtues. That girl Sumati, playing with her friends in her father's house during her childhood, started growing in such a way that the phase of the moon increases in Shukla Paksha. Every day when his father used to do home after worshiping Mother Durga, he would have been present there by the rules at that time.
One day Sumati got involved in a game with her friends and did not attend the worship of Bhagwati. Her father got angry seeing such carelessness of the daughter and started saying to the daughter, Oh wicked daughter! Today you have not worshiped Bhagwati, because of this I will marry you with a leprosy patient or a poor person.
Sumati was very sad to hear such a word of her father and started saying to her father - O father! I am your daughter and I am under you in all respects, do as you wish. Marry me with the king, with the wrestle, the poor or with whomever you want, but that is what is written in my destiny, I have unshakable faith that the one who does the work gets the same result according to the deeds because the person who does the work. But it is under God to bear fruit.
Just as the Trinaadi makes it more illumined by falling in the fire. In this way, hearing the words spoken by the girl fearlessly, that brahmin got angry, married his daughter with a wrestle and became very angry and started saying to the daughter - O daughter! Enjoy the fruits of your karma, see what you do by relying on luck.
Hearing such bitter words of her father, Sumati started thinking in her mind – Aha! It is my great misfortune that I got such a husband. In this way, considering her misery, the girl went to the forest with her husband and spent that night with great pain in that deserted forest with fear.
Seeing such a condition of that poor girl, Goddess Bhagwati appeared to Sumati by the influence of her past virtue and said to Sumati - O humble brahmin! I am happy with you, you can ask for any boon you want. Hearing this word of Bhagwati Durga, the Brahmin said - Who are you, tell me all that? Hearing such a word of Brahmini, the goddess said that I am Adi Shakti Bhagwati and I am Brahmavidya and Saraswati. When I am happy, I remove the suffering of the creatures and give them happiness. O brahmin! I am pleased with the effect of the virtue of your previous birth on you.
I narrate the story of your previous birth, listen! You were the woman of Nishad (Bhil) in the previous birth and were very pious. One day your husband Nishad stole. Because of stealing, both of you were caught by the soldiers and taken away and imprisoned in the jail. They did not even give food to you and your husband.
In this way, during Navratri, you neither ate anything nor drank water, thus Navratri fasted for nine days. O brahmin! The fast which took place during those days, being pleased with the effect of this fast, I give you the desired boon, ask for whatever you want.
Thus listening to the words of Durga, the Brahmin said if you are pleased with me, then O Durga. I bow to you, please remove my husband's leprosy. The Goddess said- Offer one day of the fast that you had observed in those days to remove the leprosy of your husband, due to the effect of that virtue, your husband will be free from leprosy.
Brahma ji said - Thus the Brahmin was very pleased to hear the words of the goddess and when she said such a word to her husband, with the desire to cure her husband, then her husband's body became free from leprosy by the grace of Goddess Durga.
Seeing the beautiful body of the Brahmin husband, she started praising the goddess - O Durga! You are the one who removes misfortunes, the one who destroys the sorrows of the three worlds, the one who removes all sorrows, heals the sick, becomes happy, bestows the desired boon and destroys the wicked.
Hey Ambe! My innocent Abla was thrown out of the house by my father after marrying a wicked man. Despised by my father, I am wandering in the deserted forest, You have saved me from this calamity, O Goddess. I salute you protect me.
Brahma said - O Brihaspati ji ! The goddess was very pleased to hear such praise of that brahmin and said to the brahmin - O brahmin! A very intelligent, wealthy, famous and witty son named Tere Udalaya will soon be born. By granting such a boon, the goddess again told the brahmin that oh brahmin! And ask whatever you want. Hearing such a word of Bhagwati Durga, Sumati said that O Bhagwati Durga! If you are pleased with me, then please describe me in detail the method of Navratri fasting and its results.
Thus hearing the words of the brahmin, Durga said - O brahmin! I tell you the method of Navratri fast, which removes all the sins, by listening to which one attains salvation - fasting for nine days from the Pratipada of the Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month, if you cannot fast for the whole day, then one meal at a time. Do it. After asking learned brahmins, establish a ghat and make a garden and irrigate it with water daily.
Establish idols of Goddess Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati and worship them regularly and offer Arghya with flowers. By offering arghya from the fruit of Bijora, the form is attained. Giving arghya with nutmeg gives fame, by giving arghya with wine one gets accomplishment, by offering arghya with gooseberry one gets happiness and by offering arghya with banana one gets ornaments.
In this way, after offering Arghya with flowers and fruits, after the fast is over, on the ninth day, perform Havan as per the procedure. Make havan with Khand, Ghee, Wheat, Honey, Barley, Sesame, Bilva (Bael), Coconut, Vine and Kadamba etc. By doing home with wheat, Lakshmi is attained, by the flowers of Kheer and Champa one obtains wealth and by the leaves of Bel leaves one attains speed and happiness.
From gooseberry one gets fame and from banana one gets son, from lotus one gets royal respect and from vines one gets wealth. Doing home with Khand, Ghee, Coconut, Honey, Barley and Sesame and fruits gives desired object.
The person who observes the fast should worship the Acharya with utmost humility by following this method and give him Dakshina for the accomplishment of the Yagya. According to the method described in this way, all the desires of the person who observes the fast are fulfilled, there is no doubt about it.
Whatever charity is given during these nine days, it gets the fruits of crores of times. Observing this Navratri fast gives the fruits of Ashwamedha Yagya. O brahmin! One who fulfills all these wishes, should observe the best fast in a pilgrimage, temple or at home as per the procedure.
Brahma said - O Brihaspati ji ! In this way, the goddess became infatuated by telling the brahmin the method and fruits of the fast. The man or woman who observes this fast with devotion, attains happiness in this world and eventually attains the rare salvation.
O Brihaspati ji! This is the significance of this rare fast which I have told you. Hearing this, Brihaspati ji became ecstatic with joy and started saying to Brahmaji that O Brahman! You have been very kind to me who told me the greatness of this Navratri fast. Brahma ji said that O Brihaspeteya! This Goddess Bhagwati Shakti is the sustainer of all the worlds, who can know the effect of this Mahadevi? Speak the glory of Goddess Bhagwati.
